Dr. Kathie Doole, known as Dr. D to her former students, is originally from Northern New Jersey.  She has been the State Awards Program Director for 14 years, the State Awards Committee Chair for 2 years and was PBL adviser at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College for 20 years, retiring in June 2016.  She has also been a Professional Division-Foundation member for 25 years.  Kathie graduated from one of New Jersey’s state teacher’s colleges, William Paterson College, with a BA in Elementary Education and Library Science.  After moving to North Carolina, she graduated from Blue Ridge Community College with an AA degree in Electronic Data Processing Technology, a Master of Arts degree in Education from Western Carolina University, and in 2006, a Doctorate degree in Adult & Community College Education from NC State.

In 2008, Kathie received the PBL Local Chapter Adviser of the Year award, was awarded the Teacher of the Year award at A-B Tech in 2013, was added to the FBLA-PBL National Center Wall of Fame in 2015, and awarded the Professional Division-Foundation Distinguished Service Award in 2017.

After initially teaching at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels, she taught for 25 years at A-B Tech.  Even after retiring from teaching, Kathie has continued to be involved in several organizations.  For 31 years, she has been a volunteer docent at the Historic Johnson Farm in Henderson County, giving tours to school children as well as Farm visitors.  Currently she is on the Historic Johnson Farm Board and Chair for the Programs & Events Committee, is the Mills River representative to the Henderson County Historic Resource Commission, a member of the Western North Carolina Quilters Guild, the Blue Ridge Chapter of Quilts of Valor, and the “Sew What” group of Henderson County.  She has also taken Henderson County history classes at Blue Ridge Community College which have added local information with tours at the Johnson Farm.

Kathie believes in the PBL goals and works with events at the state and national level to make sure everything runs smoothly – even with over 60 events and 250-300 student members participating during the state leadership conference.  Her dedication to knowing the PBL program and making sure it operates fairly and with complete credibility has allowed all other state advisers to work with their own student members with ease and confidence.

Kathie hopes to contribute to the PD-F Board with her knowledge of teaching and working with college students on what NCPBL stands for and how it can help them in their future.
